By detoxifying diet or detox diet we mean a proper diet aimed at purifying the body of exogenous toxins, accumulated because of the contemporary lifestyle because conveyed by junk food, nervine drinks, psychological stress, from drugs and environmental pollution.
The detoxification diet or detox diet therefore aims to improve the general state of health.
Although not directly aimed at weight loss, because of the very low amount of energy introduced with food, it is not uncommon for a (more or less conspicuous) reduction in body weight because of the depletion of the fat to occur, but also muscle proteins, glycogen and body hydration.
The detoxifying or detox diet are many and (for various reasons which we will discuss below), not being able to return to the so-called conventional medicine, they are all part of a branch called “alternative medicine“; for convenience, we will summarise the characteristics shared by the main detoxification or detox diet systems without NEVER going into the specifics of one or the author in question.
A holistic system
Some founders proudly argue that the detoxification diet or detox diet represents a nutritional scheme with holistic properties, it makes use of mechanisms a simple schematisation or logical explanation can not explain that. From a scientific point of view, this is an at least questionable, not to say extravagant aspect.
In the experimental field, in fact, the justification of the methods, the means, the tools and the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the various processes, represent the fundamental presupposition of the research itself.
Therefore, to speak of “Holistic Detox” means to totally ignore both the verification of the efficacy of the proposed diet, and its real health impact.
There are also those who try their hand at differentiating other curative disciplines; this is the case of “Biontology”.
This is defined as the study of the essence of life aimed at achieving health and well-being; not surprisingly, bi-ontological systems (which have roots in Chinese medicine) use the detoxification or detox diet method to obtain the maximum desirable result.
Principles and mechanisms of the detox diet
The detoxifying diet or detox diet is based on the complementary application of some principles:
Change the food style: promoting the consumption of detoxifying or detox foods to replace the intoxicating ones.
- Detoxifying foods are all those rich in water, fibre, vitamins, mineral salts and antioxidants. Intoxicants contain animal proteins, additives, bad fats and cholesterol, pollutants, drugs, nerve molecules etc. and these are mainly: fast-food foods (fried foods, hamburgers, frankfurters, etc.), snacks and other packaged products, added fats, salty foods, sugary foods, coffee, spirits, etc. change your lifestyle: by increasing physical activity, eliminating smoking, reducing exposure to environmental pollution and correctly managing psychological stress;
- Reduce the use of medications;
- Use detoxification systems or parallel detoxes: the most famous is (or was) “aqua detox – foot detox”, an electric foot bath that would facilitate the detoxification of the organism through the ionic – chemical exchange of the skin. Obviously, it was put under investigation because it was considered a real scam (read the review of Dr Ben Goldacre). Colon cleansing (enteroclysms), chelation therapies, removal of dental fillings, etc. are also widespread.
- Begin mental stabilisation courses: through the practice of activities such as “Yoga detox” or meditation.
As mentioned, the hypothetical physiological mechanisms on which the detoxification or detox diet is based are not always well defined.
The various strategies seem to be aimed at stopping the accumulation of toxins by promoting their active disposal; based on some physiological principles (more or less “sketched”), the “gurus” of the detoxifying diet or detox diet affirm that through this technique it is possible to stop the accumulation of mucus saturated with toxins in various districts of the body.
Besides the discharge of the hepatic-renal work (processing and filtering of the blood), one should therefore witness the expulsion of all excess waste (mucus and organic liquids) from: digestive tract, respiratory tract, blood and skin (principle curiously similar to that of the “Diet without mucus”).
Red Tea Detox
One of the best-known remedies to help us detoxify our body is Red Tea.
In fact, most people are familiar with the health benefits of tea, because of its antioxidant properties. Red tea, however, may not be as widely heard of or used.
This red tea, also known as ?rooibos,? has a host of benefits, including immune system health and aiding with common aches and pains. Stomach cramps, headaches, allergies, asthma, insomnia, eczema and high blood pressure are some ailments that could be helped with red tea. In addition, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, flavonoid-rich foods including fruits, vegetables, red wine, chocolate and tea have cardiovascular benefits.
